HC sets aside conviction of ex-DMK MLA in rape case

The Madras High Court on Friday set aside the conviction of former DMK MLA M Rajkumar, who was awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and another person in the case relating to the rape and murder of a minor girl and acquitted them from the case.

Justice N Sathish Kumar acquitted Rajkumar and the co-accused K Jaishankar of all charges levelled against them. The Judge also directed that both of them should be set at liberty forthwith unless their custody was required in connection with any other case.

A special court trying cases against MPs and MLAs had on December 28, 2018, convicted Rajkumar and Jaishankar for rape and murder and awarded 10 years RI and imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 and Rs 12,000 respectively on them, while acquitting five others from the case.

The duo was charged with kidnap, sexual assault and murder of the girl, who had worked as a domestic help at Rajkumar’s house, in 2012. The case was probed by the CB-CID.
