Don’t tweak Class 10 students’ marks: Tamil Nadu warns private schools

Usually, management of all schools are expected to upload student’s details including data of attendance register, marks of quarterly and half yearly exam results in Education Management Information System (EMIS), a common online platform. This practice is not mandatory in private schools.

A senior official from the Directorate of School Education said that as the government does not have the exam data of private institutions, teachers, parents, and academicians have raised serious apprehension that the term exam marks and attendance could have been manipulated. “We do not have private school students’ performance data and therefore, it would be difficult for education authorities to track them manually and certain schools could try to manipulate them,” he said.

Stating that all the complaints will be taken up, the official said the government is in the process of working out various options, including declaring a grading system for Class 10 students.

State Platform for Common School System – Tamil Nadu (SPCSS-TN) general secretary P B Prince Gajendra Babu said that calculating marks secured in quarterly and half yearly examinations and considering it as marks for SSLC Public Examination is a great injustice. “Similarly, a student absent for genuine reasons could have been the best performer in all academic activities. Such students will be put to unnecessary hardship if attendance becomes the yardstick for deciding 20% of the marks.”
