Class 10 exams: Minister gave in after 1-hour talk by Chief Minister, OPS

Cancelling Class 10 board exam was not an easy task for AIADMK convenor and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. It took over an hour to convince an adamant School Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan, a senior in the party.

At one point, Panneerselvam even opted to walk out, finally, Chief Minister Palaniswami convinced both deputy CM and Sengottaiyan. “Sengottaiyan is a senior to both OPS and EPS and it was a tough day for the party top brass to convince the super senior,” a highly placed AIADMK source told DT Next.

The CM’s announcement to cancel board exams was a surprise to senior officials in the education department. However, the public is happy with the announcement, said a party source privy to the development.

The soft-spoken Panneerselvam also cautioned that any judgment against the State by the Madras High Court hearing the Class 10 exam issue will bring a bad reputation for AIADMK government. It was a conscious decision by the party leaders. Now the court and the opposition DMK will have no role to play.

Later party senior C Ponnaiyan was also assigned to comfort the sulking AIADMK Ministers. According to AIADMK party headquarters sources, the party is facing similar problems with a few other Ministers. Health, local administration and the forest departments are now in news for certain wrong strategies during the coronavirus outbreak. The untimely demise of DMK MLA J Anbazhagan due to coronavirus and the State’s proposal to create an ‘eco-sensitive zone’ for historical Vedanthangal sanctuary are now political issues for the party to deal with.

The bird sanctuary reclassification of zones proposal submitted to the Centre had also backfired and irked alliance partner PMK.

The forest department had issued a media statement clarifying that there will be no harm to the bird sanctuary, but almost all the parties except the opposition DMK have started opposing the proposal.
