Experts panel tells CM to keep curbs in Chennai, 3 dists

With four districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram coming under the national list of COVID hotspots, the State is all set to sail with the Centre’s advisory under which there will be no new lockdown relaxations from Monday.

Earlier in the day a high-level meeting comprising members from the Indian Council of Medical Research also met the Chief Minister and recommended the continuation of lockdown norms for few more weeks.

The committee also urged him not to allow public transport until the infection rate is reduced. The committee also insisted not to open the metro rail services for another month.

However, from Monday, districts in green zones are likely to get new relaxations and further orders are awaited, sources said.After the meeting, Dr Prabhdeep Kaur, ICMR – Scientist and deputy director, National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai told reporters that the infection rate in Chennai and its neighbouring districts like Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram was high. The committee has suggested the extension of lockdown in these four districts. ‘‘We have also urged the State to increase the number of swab tests. The State has increased the bed strength and the situation is being monitored,’’ Dr Kaur added.

Former Corporation health officer Dr P Kuganantham insisted that the public should compulsorily wear masks to reduce the infection rate and urged the media to create more awareness and report the myths and misconceptions spread in social media.

According to State officials, K Palaniswami met officials of the Agriculture Department, expert medical committee and banking representatives to discuss the situation and economic crisis.
