However, some good news is that the School Education Department is mulling to introduce online admissions similar to the way it’s done by the government in Rights to Education (RTE) admissions for the students from economically poor backgrounds in private schools.

A senior official from the Directorate of School Education told DT Next that every year the new admissions in government and governmentaided schools would begin in the second week of April on completion of the board exams.

“Teachers and non-teaching staff will be deployed to look after all the admission process, which are manually conducted, from receiving the applications from the parents to admitting the students,” he said. Stating that this year the government had charted an ambitious target to admit an additional 10,000 new students from primary school to high school in government schools, the official said “to achieve the target, we had planned to begin the new admission related works this month by taking new initiatives including sending teachers on a door-to-door canvassing to convince the parents to send their children to government schools”.

“We had also planned to print pamphlets, highlighting the advantages of obtaining admissions in government high schools, to be given to the parents through teachers,” he noted.

Pointing out that all the plans for getting new admissions into the State-run schools could not be executed due to total shutdown, the official said, “since manual admission process is ruled out, the authorities are now in the process of introducing online admissions in a phased manner”.
