Cases of curfew violations cross 20,000 across Tamil Nadu

They have been made to squat, do sit-ups and stand on the road holding awareness placards. But that has not stopped many from venturing out during the shutdown period as ordered.

Since the time the State was brought under prohibitory orders under Section 144, as many as 20,497 cases have been booked till Monday morning – an increase by about 5,000 in 18 hours from previous afternoon. So far, 19,637 cases have been registered for wandering on the roads, 22,906 persons have been arrested and Rs 5.25 lakh collected as penalty across the State.

In Chennai, the traffic police booked 1,971 cases for traffic violations and seized 953 vehicles, including 920 two-wheelers. The city police have set up check posts at 169 places to nab and book lockdown violators for stepping out without valid reason.

In Puzhal, the cops who stopped bikers on the empty Grand North Trunk Road made them to remain in squat position for a while.

In Red Hills, the police made them hold placards that had slogans about social distancing and coronavirus, while in some places, they were made to do sit-ups.
