The objection was conveyed at a meeting of a committee convened by Central Water Commission Chairman Rajendra Kumar Jain in which officials from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry participated.

The Supreme Court had earlier ordered a stay on construction of the check dam after Tamil Nadu’s objection that the check dam in Markandeya river will affect the water resources in Tamil Nadu. The state sought constitution of a tribunal to go into the issue.

Karnataka contended that the check dam cross Markandeya river, a tributary of South Pennaiyar, was purely for drinking water purposes and not aimed at diverting its flow direction.

With Karnataka objecting to Tamil Nadu’s demand, it was decided that both the states file their detailed reports on the issue by March 10.
