According to police, T Subramani, hailing from Narayanasamy Kovil Street in Dharapuram in Tirupur district, was arrested on charges of sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl on September 6, last year by cops of All Women’s Police Stationin Dharapuram.

The victim was also working as a construction worker. Following his arrest, Subramani was lodged at Coimbatore Central Prison and later was detained under the Goondas Act on October 2.

At the prison, Subramani had an epileptic attack on January 31. He was then admitted in the prisoner’s ward of CMCH for treatment. Around 4 am, Subramani had gone to the toilet, where he broke open the ventilator and escaped.

An hour later, another prisoner, who went to the toilet, had knocked the door repeatedly as it was locked from inside. When there was no response, he informed the armed cops guarding the ward.

It was realised then only that Subramani had already escaped. On receiving information, a team of Race Course police rushed to the hospital and launched an intensive search for the prisoner, but could not find him anywhere.

Senior officials are inquiring an SI and three other cops involved in security duty in the ward. A departmental action is likely to be taken against the cops for being negligent in duty. A search is on to nab the prisoner.
