Former CM of North Lanka backs dual citizenship call

As the demand for providing dual citizenship for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees living in several camps across Tamil Nadu gained momentum in the state in the wake of the enactment of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), former Chief Minister of Sri Lankan Northern province C V Vigneswaran urges India to extend the same as they have been living in the country for more than three decades.

Talking to reporters after participating in the Pongal festival organised by Tamil Iyakkam here, he batted for extending dual citizenship for them, while stating that the seven life convicts in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case might not have had any direct involvement in it.

While extending his support for the return of Sri Lankan Tamils, he said more than one lakh Lankan Tamils were living here. “They get several facilities here, including higher education, for their children. Since they must extend their stay in India for this purpose and to continue to avail these benefits, they need dual citizenship, though we want them to return to our country soon,” Vigneswaran said.
