Anganwadi KG-schools merger likely

Kindergarten classes in anganwadi centres, which were introduced earlier this year to encourage admissions in government educational institutions, will be merged with State-run primary schools even as the Tamil Nadu government mulls over the opening of more such schools under the provisions of the Right to Education Act (RTE) by inviting a comprehensive plan from all the district education offices, sources said.

The State government’s decision to merge LKG and UKG classes with primary schools comes against the backdrop of reports of the lack of infrastructural facilities in anganwadi centres, resulting in them not being on a par withprivate institutions.

At present, kindergarten classes are functioning in more than 2,000 government anganwadi centres across the State with an enrolment of more than 52,000 children since the start of this academic year.

A senior official from the Directorate of Elementary Education, while mentioning that there currently are a little over 30,000 primary government and government-aided schools functioning across the State, said, “In addition to the merging of LKG and UKG classes, it has also been proposed to start new primary schools across the State to increase admissions at thekindergarten level.”

Stating that authorities from the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) will coordinate with district educational officers with respect to the move, the official added, “We have asked to send their proposals for starting new primary schools along with GIS images of that area.”

The GIS-based image database will be used to take decisions on opening new schools in any habitation as mandated by RTE rules, the official said, adding that a school mapping exercise has been undertaken at the elementary level to devise a suitable strategy for the children in un-served habitations to have safe access to school.

Further, the official said that district educational officers have been instructed to ensure that the land, which is suitable for establishing a primary school, should possess all related documents that should be attested by the respective village officers. In addition, the educational officers have been asked to identify primary schools for upgrading them to middle schools, the official said.

All relevant data will be compiled by the end of December so that a final list of new primary schools can be prepared, the official said.
