Mediation centre to deal Ilaiyaraja case

In a move to resolve the legal tussle between renowned music composer Ilaiyaraja and Prasad Studios over vacating a space allocated to him within the premises that he had been using for the past four decades, the Madras High Court on Tuesday referred the case to the Tamil Nadu Mediation and Conciliation Centre.

Justice V Bharathidasan offered the direction while hearing a review petition moved by Ilaiyaraja seeking speedy disposal of a suit before a Chennai civil court. The plea had also sought for an interim order restraining the removal of the structure.

However, the judge, on directing both the parties to appear before the mediator on Monday, posted the plea for further hearing on December 13. He also sought Prasad Studios to refrain from resorting to any action until then.

During the hearing, Ilaiyaraja’s counsel, A R L Sundaresan, had contended that even after several hearings, the lower court has failed to look into the loss and hardship caused to the petitioner as the management of Prasad Studios had begun to demolish portions of the super-structure abutting the said property.

Mentioning the composer having composed music for more than 1000 films in the premises, the senior counsel said that an interim order to protect his possession at the studio would cause no prejudice to the respondents.

It is said that the studio space was presented to the music composer by LV Prasad, founder of Prasad Studios. But renovation plans by Sai Prasad, his grandson, has led to Ilaiyaraja being asked to vacate and hand over the portion.
