Major challenges before new resident of Raj Bhavan

The newly appointed Governor Banwarilal Purohit does not have the luxury of time some of his predecessors had. From day one, he would have to pay attention as much to restoring public faith in the Raj Bhavan as he must to resolve the political crisis in the state.

For, his predecessor Ch Vidyasagar Rao’s stint as in-charge of Tamil Nadu has been one of the difficult times for Raj Bhavan with it being in the thick of political controversies.  There were enough events that require Banwarilal to engage in a confidence building measure. Add the ongoing cases in the Madras High Court regarding floor test, the new Governor would seldom have time to even settle in. He would be expected to engage the Opposition and the ruling dispensation equally alike. Already, the Opposition has made its expectations clear.

DMK organising secretary R S Bharati, who blamed the Prime Minister for the prevailing political crisis in the state said, “We had a Governor (in-charge), who was not so impartial during extraordinary circumstances. The new Governor should study the political instability, apply his ‘judicial’ mind and act in accordance with the Constitution.”

CPI state secretary R Muthrasan said, “We hope he will not function like his predecessor, who was partial and helped the minority Edappadi govt continue in power. The new Governor has the responsibility to protect the reputation of Raj Bhavan.”

Since the demise of former CM Jayalalithaa, the Governor office has been facing heat.  However, there were some words of comfort for the new Governor, understandably, from the ruling AIADMK.  E Madhusudhanan, presidium chairman of AIADMK said, “We must wait and see how the new Governor performs. Like Karunanidhi, his son Stalin is also power hungry. Even if God is appointed Governor, the Opposition will criticise.” The new Governor would have his work weighed only in the manner in which he resolves the present political crisis.
