Trouble started after leasor rented out land to TASMAC outlet

Tuesday’s road blockade against the opening of a new TASMAC outlet in their locality was only the last resort to ensure that the shop was not opened. Villagers close to the outlet claimed that TASMAC officials started constructing the new shop with number 2259 located off the Samalapuram to Iyyampalayam Road, six months ago.

It was hurriedly built on a piece of agricultural land belonging to Lakshmi. She had leased it to another person who in turn had permitted the TASMAC shop to be constructed there for a monthly rent of Rs 5,000.

About a month ago, the villagers made representations to the District Collector, Chief Minister’s Special Cell, revenue officials, zonal manager of TASMAC at Coimbatore and District Manager at Tirupur on the issue. They also petitioned the TANGEDCO to deny electricity connection to the shop as it is located on the agricultural land. “We only got acknowledgements but no action was taken. Instead the construction was expedited,” she added.

On Tuesday, the villagers started protesting around 10 am. Ignoring the protests totally, the government machinery inaugurated the shop around 12 noon and began sales. Though the shop was closed on Tuesday, villagers allege that liquor was illegally sold at night.
