‘Police trying to fix Abu Thahir in Sasi Kumar case’
More than 450 persons, including 60 women, were arrested by the Coimbatore City Police on Thursday for staging a protest condemning the cops and alleging foul play in the arrest of Syed Abu Thahir (29) in the murder case of Hindu Munnani functionary Sasi Kumar (36), which happened on September 22.

Abu Thahir, a pavement hawker of Ukkadam, was picked up for questioning by the CB-CID on Monday night. He was formally arrested and remanded.
Following this, members of the Social Democratic Party of India, led by its national executive committee member A S Ismail, staged a protest during which they alleged that the police have arrested an innocent person due to their inability to nab the real culprit even after a lapse of six months from the date of the murder.
Ismail recalled the arrest of six Muslim youth in 2006 by a team led by the then assistant commissioner for intelligence in the city on the charge of attempting to disturb public peace. “An enquiry by the state government proved that it was a fabricated campaign and the police personnel stood exposed. The same will happen in the present case too,” he opined. SDPI and Popular Front of India functionaries claimed that Abu Thahir has been quizzed by the police 12 times so far and the sole reason for this action of the police was that they suspect the role of Abu Thahir’s friend Saddam Husain in Sasi Kumar’s murder.
