Krishna water flow to Poondi, a big relief to PWD after Nada failure

In the wake of the poor rains as Nada weakened into a depression before it crossed the coast, the TN PWD officials have approached AP irrigation department to release 1.5 tmc from its Kandaleru reservoir, as per the pact. Officials say that the AP government has so far released .561 tmc and they have assured that the balance quantum would be released in the coming days. Meanwhile, the storage in Poondi reservoir crossed .5 tmc on Saturday morning. “There was no significant level of precipitation in the State due to the effect of the cyclone and catchment areas of the Poondi reservoir too received only meagre amount of rainfall. 

However, the continuous increase in the discharge of Krishna water has pushed up the storage in the reservoir. The inflow rose to 726 cusecs from 416,” pointed out an engineer, claiming anonymity. Though it was expected that the north-east monsoon would bring good rainfall, the first cyclone, ‘Nada’, belied all hopes, the engineer said. However, some amount of water flowed into the Poondi reservoir owing to the intermittent rains in Tiruvallur district, said another engineer. “The storage one week ago was merely 71 million cubic feet, but now, the level has increased to 285 million cubic feet and the release from Kandaleru reservoir turned out to be of great help,” he said and added that their counterparts in Andhra have assured to release at least 1 tmc of in the coming days.
