    NDRF get ready for Nada encounter

    The district administrations of Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Nagapattinam and Puducherry has geared up to meet any eventuality in view of the cyclone and all precautionary measures were taken by the respective collector. The National Disaster and Response Force (NDRF) personnel are stationed in the districts for rescue operations.

    Vulnerable areas have been identified and rescue teams were put in place to evacuate people from low lying areas. Relief camps were also kept in readiness to house the evacuated people. In Nagapattinam, the Collector S Palanisamy said a 40-member team of NDRF personnel will monitor the situation. He added that as many as 31 special teams comprising Deputy Tahsildhars will keep vigil. 

    Nearly 92 boats and four rubberised boats are also kept ready. The district administration has identified as many as 218 buildings for establishing temporary shelters. Nearly 31 locations are identified as highly vulnerable and 79 places partially vulnerable. Adequate essential commodities and food stock has been kept aside for the people who are likely to be shifted to safer places. As many as 523 village level disaster management committees are formed and VAOs, village nurses, members of SelfHelp Groups are included in the panels. They will oversee the waterbodies and ensure the safety of the bunds and free flow of rain water. 

    The Collector urged the people to be cautions and asked them to inform their location to local officials in case they are in trouble. He asked the people to consume only boiled water and keep in touch with anganwadi workers to get help in first aid. He added that they can contact 104 to avail medical assistance round the clock. Fishermen are asked to keep away from the sea and those who have already at sea are asked to rush back by the fisheries department.
