Leicester City has largely been ignored in the Premier League title race debate despite running as the closest challenger to leader Liverpool, but manager Brendan Rodgers said his side is used to being overlooked.

Leicester set a club record of eight successive top-flight wins after beating Aston Villa 4-1 on Sunday. Courtesy the historic success, it stays eight points off Liverpool. Defending champion Manchester City is third, 14 points behind the leader. “I don’t think anybody expects us to be anywhere near the top,” Rodgers told reporters.

“It doesn’t really rile us, it’s part of the game I suppose. After Manchester United won at Manchester City, a caption came up after the game about how far City is away from Liverpool. We respect that and we just get on with our job.”

Jamie Vardy is the league’s top scorer with 16 while at the other end of the pitch, Leicester has kept the most clean sheets (seven). But it is “just natural” for 2015/16 champion Leicester to fly under the radar, according to its gaffer.

“Manchester City and Liverpool are both incredible teams in the league and showed how good they were last year,” he added. “For us, we know that we are constantly trying to improve and looking to close the gap. We’re a team that finished ninth over the last two seasons.” Leicester next hosts relegation battler Norwich City on Saturday.

Wolves holds Brighton

Wolverhampton Wanderers stretched its unbeaten Premier League run to 11 games after it led and then came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Diogo Jota fired Wolves ahead and then hauled it level in a frantic first half. French forward Neal Maupay and Davy Propper got on the scoresheet for Brighton. The result left Wolves sixth in the standings on 24 points from 16 games, behind fifth-placed Manchester United on goal difference and one point ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in seventh.
