I'm a student in the university where MS Dhoni is the topper, says Dinesh Karthik
It was the firefighting ability of Dinesh Karthik that singlehandedly doused the raging inferno that threatened to gobble up the last vestiges of a famous Indian fightback in the Nidahas Cup T20I tri-series final against Bangladesh on Sunday.
Chennai
As the ball soared over the ropes to spark off scenes of jubilation in the Indian camp, a career that was punctuated by several abortive attempts at taking off into dizzying heights found solace in piloting his team into the safety of hangar. This after he navigated his team through the blustery winds of what looked a certain defeat.
Of all the 24 sixes he has struck for India so far, the one he smote off Soumya Sarkar will probably be the prized heirloom that he could pass on to his next generation.Â
It's also interesting to note how just a day before the final, Karthik spoke of the need to embrace pressure in crunch moments. And when the moment of reckoning arrived, the 32-year-old proved that talk is not always cheap.
Karthik interacted with the media personnel in Chennai on Tuesday about that six and much more…
EXCERPTS:
On the eight balls that changed his life
It feels good when the attention is on you. I'm just happy to play this sport. It was probably a difference of two millimetres to distinguish it from a four
On comparisons with MS Dhoni and taking up the role of finisher
When it comes to MS Dhoni, I feel I'm a student in the university where he is the topper. He is someone I have always looked up to. I honestly think these comparisons are unfair. I have been his understudy for many years now. Dhoni has always played a leading role in helping the youngsters
On captaining KKR in the IPL
I think I'm ready for this responsibility. This opportunity has come to me at the right stage of my career. We have a good, young side with a promising crop of fast bowlers and an excellent support staff in coach Jacques Kallis and Simon Katich. I have to sit down with the coaches and see which is the best position for me to bat. In terms of batting, we have a lot of experience in Chris Lynn, Robin Uthappa and Andre Russell. I'm also extremely happy about the return of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. These two franchises bring totally different dynamics to the game.
On playing under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy
He has been the most successful captain in the Indian Premier League winning three titles. I had the experience of playing under his leadership at Mumbai Indians. So, I was familiar with his style of captaincy and he led this young team brilliantly.
On what he told Vijay Shankar in the final over
One good thing was that he was not flustered despite failing to put bat to ball in that over bowled by Mustafizur Rahman. We must not forget that he was batting for India for the first time and he did well to score that crucial boundary to narrow down the equation. He bowled really well in the tournament and is also a brilliant fielder. I'm confident that he has a bright future ahead of him
