Virat is better than AB: Gibbs
Modern day cricket is all about adapting to situations, be it T20, Test matches or ODIs, in quick time. To be able to sustain in the long run amidst the demands of the game, fitness and athleticism play a pivotal role in a cricketer’s career, feels former South African opener Hershelle Gibbs.

In Chennai to launch the ‘Golden Goose Sports’ cricket camp for kids (named Ultimate Sports Coaching), Gibbs spoke at length on the importance of shaping a child’s career.
The camp is also overseen by cricket’s big names such as Lance Klusener, Courtney Walsh, Nicky Boje, Desmond Haynes along with head coaches Davy Jacobs and Derek Perera.
According to Gibbs, a physically fit athlete can make it big in numerous sports. “It is beyond doubt that sport has evolved over the years. The players now are more of athletes. The bigger picture is always athleticism. Why should one always become a Sachin or Kohli? India has deep talent where we can unearth a Ronaldo, a Messi, a Bolt or even a Serena. It all boils down to being fit,” he added.
Asked to choose between Virat and compatriot AB de Villers as to who is the best among them, Gibbs favoured the Indian. “Both of them are exceptional performers under pressure. However, Virat scores over AB as he handles the bigger moments better than AB,” he added.
Gibbs added that the epic match against Australia, where South Africa chased down 434 in 50 overs to win was the best of his career. “I don’t think I can do it today, in these situations. I am happy that it happened once and I played a part in the win,” he added.
Head coach Davy Jacobs said introducing the children to expert fitness techniques forms an integral part of coaching. “The muscles can be moulded well when the kids are young. I have seen how many children have a natural grip on the ball when they run into bowl. The physical aspect should be given more importance than technical at this age,” the former Mumbai Indians opener said.
K Yeragaselvan, CEO of Golden Goose said the idea of involving big names started in 2013. “I was managing one of the teams in the Caribbean Premier League when I observed the immense difference in the standard. When I pitched the idea to Desmond Haynes of giving it back to the game, he readily agreed,” the CEO added.
The coaching is done on an advanced level with the use of technology like Pitch Vision. “Course correction methods including minute adjustments along with videos are possible. This makes technology an integral part in training, which is important in a modern day game,” he added.
