Chennai: After more than 150 days since his arrest for the kidnap and sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in Arambakkam police station limits in neighbouring Tiruvallur district, the accused was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court for Pocso (protection of children from sexual offences) Act cases on Wednesday.

Kale Biswakarma (35), a native of Dibrugarh, Assam, was secured on July 26 from a dhaba in Sulurpet, Andhra Pradesh, where he had been working for more than a decade.

On July 12 this year, the child was walking back to her grandmother’s house after school when Kale stalked her and later, kidnapped her. He took her to a mango grove and sexually assaulted her.

The stalking and abduction was recorded in a CCTV camera at a nearby shop.

Apart from the partial CCTV footage and verbal description of Kale given by the child, police did not have any other reliable information regarding his identity. Multiple teams headed by Tiruvallur SP Vivekananda Shukla were formed.

Deputy Superintendents of Police – Jaishree, Tamilarasi, Shanthi, Pugalenthi Ganesh, and Jaffer Siddhiq, and Assistant Superintendent of Police Raveendrakumar Guptha, along with 20 Inspectors, 40 sub-inspectors and other personnel were deployed to trace him.

TN Police even announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh for persons providing credible information on the suspect. “Teams were sent to camp in areas where guest workers stay.

A core technical team was also formed to analyse various type of data. Another team was tasked to continuously check trains and patrolled all major railway stations in TN and neighbouring states for almost 2 weeks.

One of the CCTV cameras captured a blurred image of Kale in a local train from Sulurpeta towards Chennai. Using AI tools, we generated his photo and distributed it across TN,” explained a statement from Tiruvallur district police.

Two weeks after the heinous crime, which attracted public outrage in Arambakkam, police teams secured Kale. The district police submitted the final report within 40 days of the arrest and a trial monitoring team was constituted.

“Blood-stained clothes of the child and the accused and other biological evidence were seized. CCTV footage from nearby establishments was also collected and preserved as electronic evidence.

Biological and DNA analysis matched Kale with the offence, hence providing strong scientific corroboration,” the district police said.

After perusing the submissions, Judge C Uma Maheswari sentenced Kale to life imprisonment.
