CHENNAI: The Left parties and MNM have welcomed the verdict delivered by the Mahila Court sentencing Gnanasekar, the accused in the Anna University sexual assault case, to 30 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 90,000.
CPM state secretary P Shanmugam welcomed the ruling, appreciating it as a rare instance of speedy justice. “This is a rare instance of speedy justice. The court has rightly convicted the accused on 11 charges. However, the fact that the FIR containing the survivor’s identity was available publicly is a grave lapse. Strong action must be taken to ensure such violations do not recur,” the Left leader said. He further urged the State to “ensure campus safety with adequate CCTV coverage, proper security personnel, and restrictions on unauthorised access.”
CPI state secretary R Mutharasan said, “The swift investigation and conviction in this case reinforce public confidence in the justice system. The courage of the survivor and the work of the women-led investigation team are commendable. This verdict empowers women to seek justice through legal means.”
