CHENNAI: Onion prices at the Chennai's Koyambedu wholesale market have risen to Rs 50 per kg from Rs 30-35 earlier this month, with wholesalers attributing the increase to a drop in arrivals from major producing states, according to a Daily Thanthi report.
Wholesalers said heavy rains in Maharashtra and increased onion exports have reduced the supply of onions from northern states to Koyambedu Market. Onions from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are sold at the market.
Traders said the daily arrival of onions, which usually stands at 70-80 trucks, has fallen to around 50 trucks.
