Chennai: Anti-NEET federation holds solidarity gathering for Anitha

CHENNAI: The Anti-NEET Federation-Tamil Nadu held a solidarity gathering at Besant Nagar beach on Monday to commemorate the ninth death anniversary of S Anitha, who died in 2017 after failing to secure a medical seat under the NEET system.

The gathering was organised to remember Anitha and highlight the federation’s opposition to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions. Participants, including Anitha's brother S Manirathinam, reiterated their demand for the abolition of NEET and called for greater autonomy for states in deciding admission policies for professional courses.

The federation also demanded that education be brought back under the State List, arguing that states should have greater control over education-related policies.

Anitha, a student from Ariyalur district, had secured high marks in the Class 12 board examinations but was unable to obtain a medical seat through NEET. Her suicide became a major flashpoint in TN’s opposition to the entrance examination.
