Man arrested for stealing bag with jewels from passenger in CMBT

The woman passenger, a resident of Mettukuppam in Maduravoyal was traveling to Tiruvannamalai with her husband, Jayaraman. On Saturday night, the couple had boarded a bus inside CMBT.

CHENNAI: City Police on Sunday arrested a 37-year-old man for allegedly stealing a bag containing 16 sovereign gold jewels and 410 grams silver articles from a woman passenger from a government bus in Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) in Koyambedu on Saturday night.

The woman passenger, a resident of Mettukuppam in Maduravoyal was traveling to Tiruvannamalai with her husband, Jayaraman. On Saturday night, the couple had boarded a bus inside CMBT.

Jayaraman had got out of the bus to buy water bottles. Noticing this, the accused who was also in the bus managed to steal the bag besides the lady and fled the scene. When Jayaraman boarded the bus, he found the bag missing and questioned his wife, after which they realised the bag was stolen.

Based on their complaint, CMBT police perused the CCTV footage and zeroed in on the accused and secured him.

The arrested person was identified as S Karl Marx of Ariyalur district. Police recovered the bag with the gold and silver jewels intact. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.
