CHENNAI: With six persons earlier, including a prison staff, arrested in the kidnapping of a Chennai businessman, police on Monday arrested a city-based cosmetologist, Dr Amritha Juliana for allegedly plotting the kidnap.

The lady doctor was married to an IAS officer and they are divorced. Police sources said that she was upset over the harassment by the abducted businessman, V Saravanan, whom she was acquainted with and made use of his business enemy, Arokiaraj’s spite towards him and encouraged him to kidnap him.

Saravanan who was kidnapped from his house on Ramasamy Street on August 20 was rescued within hours by the city police.

Police subsequently arrested a financier, S Arokiaraj (42) and his associates, A Aravindh Guru (23), B Afroz (23), A Ajay (24), S Vijayapandi (25) and B Nagendran (31), the Coimbatore prison staff.

Police said that Saravanan had borrowed Rs 1 crore from Arockiaraj. Since Saravanan defaulted on paying back the loan, Arockiaraj took it upon his own hands to get back the money, with prodding from the lady doctor.

On Saturday evening, around 3.30 pm, Saravanan was at his brother’s house on Ramasamy Street in T Nagar when he received a call from the financier Arockia Raj to meet him, on Amritha’s instructions.

When they met, the financier’s men bundled Saravanan into a SUV and sped away.

Public who witnessed the incident alerted the police control room and within two hours, the vehicle used for the abduction was intercepted on East cost road and Saravanan was rescued, police said.

The police team rescued the victim who was detained in an SUV on East Coast Road (ECR) and another team of police recovered a Mercedes Benz and a BMW car belonging to Saravanan that were abandoned near Thoraipakkam.

Police said that Amritha was booked under Section 120 IPC (party to a criminal conspiracy). She was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
