CHENNAI: In 2019, the Chennai airport touched the milestone of operating 500 flights in a day and became only the third airport in India after Mumbai and Delhi to achieve this milestone. However, due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in March 2020 and the lockdown, aviation was affected completely. Now since the situation is becoming normal in India the restrictions for the passengers in the Chennai airport have been lifted and day by day the footfall of the passengers is increasing at the Chennai airport.

In 2019, 514 flights were operated in a day and the passenger footfall was around 46,000. Now for the past few days, 74 International flights and 328 Domestic flights are being operated in a day and the passenger footfall crossed 50,000.

Airport sources said the domestic terminal recorded a footfall of about 40,000 passengers while International Terminal recorded a footfall of about 11,000 passengers.

Airport officials believe that footfall may increase in the upcoming days since more international flights are to be operated from April second week. This also indicates that the situation has become normal in the country, they added.
