HC to hear plea on Vel Yatra today

A batch of pleas have been moved at the Madras High Court seeking to ban ‘Vel Yatra’ proposed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu saying that the rally besides aiding the spread of COVID-19 was bound to create law and order problems as the rally has been planned to end on December 6, the date of Babri Masjid demolition.

A division bench comprising Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice R Hemalatha on accounting for the mentions made on Wednesday by the counsels appearing for the litigants to hear the pleas on an urgent basis pointed out that the government will discharge its duties and litigants cannot be allowed to garner publicity on the issue.

However, the bench agreed to hear a plea moved by Stalin Abhimanyu on Thursday since the plea has been numbered while refusing to hear other unnumbered petitions in this regard.

The plea had contended that in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government has taken several steps to prohibit mass gathering of people. But contrary to this, BJP state president L Murugan, has announced recently that he will be undertaking a ‘Vel Yatra.
