Supply issues may send up veg prices

With continued supply shortages due to a poor second crop and lack of farm hands due to lockdown restrictions, the price of vegetables is expected to increase by about ten per cent in the following week, say vendors.

The rise can be expected for the rest of the month, said P Sukumaran, treasurer, Koyambedu Wholesale Market Merchants’ Association. “This will last for a week, following which we can expect the prices to increase or remain the same. We do not expect prices to fall due to the supply shortages. The second crop is ending, and farmers have planted less crop due to the pandemic,” he said.

Vegetables like tomatoes and onions will not see an increase. But vegetables like broad beans, beans, carrot and brinjal are expected to see an increase this week.
