According to Chennai Corporation sources, L Nandakumar, Chief Engineer (General), has been infected with the virus. “As he did not have any symptoms during the first couple of days, he was allowed to be under home quarantine. But, he was moved to a private hospital after he developed some symptoms,” a source said.

The source added that Nandakumar’s health condition is stable and he is participating in official meetings through video conferencing. Apart from the chief engineer, around 40 engineers and other civic officials have been infected and some of them have recovered to re-join the work.

“Most of the engineers, who are working in division-level, are the affected ones as they are coordinating the Chennai Corporations COVID-19 control micro-plan,” the source added.

According to the civic body, close to 400 officials and workers, including sanitary inspectors, assistant revenue officials and conservancy workers, have tested positive since the outbreak and 11 workers have succumbed. Also, several officials, including senior officials, seated in the Ripon Building were tested positive for the virus.
