Forced to forego salary towards CM fund: Cops

Even as the DGP’s office instructed the heads of all wings to take a list of police personnel willing to forgo one-day salary towards the Chief Minister’s COVID-19 relief fund, the traffic cops in the city complain that they are being forced to give their consent to facilitate the deduction.

A traffic enforcement wing head constable told DTNext that he told the official that he is not in a position to contribute his one-day salary when the Assistant Commissioner contacted him asking why he did not give his consent. “When the individual staff is given the choice to decide what he or she finds convenient, there should not be any interference from the seniors. But when a senior officer contacts the subordinates individually, it can only be considered as an indirect threat,” said the head constable.

The constable said after the call from the officer, eight of the 18 constables who were unwilling to forgo salary gave consent out of fear of disciplinary action. He said the government has already cut the DA and shut the option of surrendering the leaves for encashment, which would amount to a loss of about Rs 40,000.

There was also an audio of a woman police personnel doing the rounds on WhatsApp that she feels betrayed to forgo one-day salary even after working as a frontline warrior during the lockdown braving the virus threat.
