Customs seizes gold worth Rs 2.05 crore at airport

The Customs officials seized 4.8 kg gold worth Rs 2.05 crore and arrested five persons, including two women, at the Chennai airport on Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday morning, the officials recovered 1.192 gm of gold worth Rs 50.55 lakh from one Ravi of Chennai, who arrived from Bangkok. He was carrying the gold in his pockets, a release said, adding that he was arrested.


On Saturday, the customs officials intercepted a woman employee of a private food outlet. On search, she was found carrying 2.8 kg gold worth Rs 1.17 crore in a cloth pouch attached to her waist. The woman, identified as A Vijayakumari, was arrested and two passengers — Ayesha Banu and Ibrahim, who handed over the gold to her — were also arrested.


In another incident on Saturday, Mohamed Azeem Sarook (19) from Ramamanthapuram, who arrived from Colombo, was found hiding 598 gm of gold worth Rs 25 lakh in his rectum. He was arrested by the customs officials.


Another youth who arrived from Colombo was also found carrying 296 gm gold worth Rs 12.55 lakh. The gold was seized.
