The beautification work at Vengaivasal and Perumbakkam lakes will start in February. A PWD official said that the government has sanctioned funds under the Environment Protection and Renewable Energy Development Fund of Environment and Forests Department.

“The project aims to improve the lakes’ water storage capacity and increase the groundwater level in the locality. We need at least a month to remove the garbage and water hyacinth and only then the desilting work will start. We will also strengthen the bunds and reconstruct the damaged structures of the bund. After that, we will start the work on eco-park,” said K Asokan, Chief Engineer, PWD.

“The park will have a play area for children, a palmyra park, a walking track for 2 km and boating. As part of the project, a sewage treatment plant will also be set up to ensure that the freshwater enters the lakes,” he added.

Both the lakes play a vital role in maintaining the level of the groundwater table. After two years of struggle by the residents, the officials have taken up the initiative to restore the lake.
