All-woman gang uses elderly as bait to kidnap, rob woman

The victim, Basheera Banu, wife of Mohammed Yusuf and resident of Muthamizh Nagar in Kodungaiyur, was walking towards a restaurant on South Avenue in the locality on Sunday night to buy dinner for her mother-in-law.

As Basheera Banu had just returned home from a family function, she had not removed the jewels.

A woman senior citizen intercepted her and sought alms. After Basheera gave her Rs 10, the elderly woman asked Basheera to help her cross Tondiarpet High Road.

When she did so, a group of women who were waiting in an autorickshaw on the other side of the road pushed both the elderly women and Basheera into the vehicle and drove away.

After robbing all her jewels weighing over 15 sovereigns at knifepoint, they left her on the road and fled the spot. Basheera, with the help of a passer-by, informed her husband about the incident.

Based on their complaint, the Kodungaiyur police registered a case. The police have also collected CCTV footage from the area of the incident and are combing them to identify the suspects.

In her complaint, Basheera said that the auto driver was a woman and the police suspect that the senior citizen could also be a part of the gang.
