The deceased were identified as R Udhayakumar and R Vincent. The duo climbed on the transformer located at the junction on Audiyappa Naicken Street and Govindappa Naicken Street in Sowcarpet at around 11 am, when electricity passed through the cables. One of them was thrown off on to the road, while the other’s body hung in the transformer after he died.

“Both the workers climbed the transformer to work on the power line after the supply from the substation was switched off. But when they touched the power line, they were electrocuted. We suspect that the power supply might be due to the reverse supply from the inverter or generators in a house or commercial building,” said a Tangedco official. The official noted that when the consumers use battery-backed inverter or generator at the times of power cut, the supply should not pass into the grid.

A senior Tangedco official said that only after receiving a detailed report from the field engineers, there would be a clarity on the reason for the electrocution. “We have given all the field assistants and workers with safety equipment including gloves and boots,” the official said, adding that the workers often fail to make use of the rubber gloves and boots while attending to faults.

The onlookers immediately informed the EB officials and the fire control room to attend the issue. On information, the fire tender from the High Court fire station rushed to the spot and disconnected the power supply. The Tangedco workers’ body which removed were sent to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for autopsy. A case has been registered and further inquiry is on.

Both the deceased workers are about 40 years of age. Udhayakumar hails from Minjur while Vincent is from Sharma Nagar at Vyasarpadi. Vincent is survived by wife Sumatra and two children – Sanjana (10) and Leo Berlin (5).
