Free ‘beer’ sent along with food via delivery app shocks Chennaiites

Several Chennaiites were in for a surprise when their meal or snack ordered through the Swiggy app came accompanied with some Budweiser ‘beer’. While a few were thrilled to get a free drink, some teetotallers and family folk were not too happy that ‘alcohol’ was delivered to their homes.

Social media woke up to the free Budweiser ‘beers’ after a regular contributor to Chennai Food Guide, a social media platform that has over 100,000 members, posted his concern. Agraj Sethi, posted that he ordered some noodles on Swiggy, but his order came with two beer bottles. He claimed he called both the restaurant and Swiggy, but no one claimed responsibility for the beverage. “.. an old guy ( Male) comes with one Schezwan Noodles, two bottles of Budweiser 0.0 Beer bottles and Lemon Pickle. Since its new year, be careful guys,” warned Sethi. It turned out that the beer was non-alcoholic, but quite a few people agreed that not everyone would be comfortable with drinks being delivered to their homes.

Another Swiggy consumer from Thiruverkadu confirmed that this promotion has been on for a few weeks now. “I had ordered chilli beef from a restaurant at Mogappair and the delivery boy who came late, tried to cheer me up with a bottle of Budweiser. While he did succeed in his mission, two days later I found that the beverage was ‘non-alcoholic’ and had been taking up unnecessary space in my refrigerator,” he said.

Staff at Swiggy confirmedthat they have been carrying outSampling (product trial) campaigns for some popular brands in the F&B and FMCG space, where samples are delivered to consumers along with food.
