STP at Kilambakkam terminus to reduce fresh water usage

According to CMDA sources, sewage treatment plant would function on sequential batch reactor process technology with a capacity of 650 KLD (kilo litre per day) capacity. “The treatment plant will be covered trees and plants on four sides to absorb the excess carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere,” the sources said. The bus terminal is estimated to generate 572 KLD of sewage water every day.
The planning authority has estimated the total freshwater requirement to run the bus terminus at 456 KLD and water from would be supplied by the local panchayat and through water tankers. The freshwater would be utilised for domestic purposes and bus washing.
As per CMDA data, 224 KLD of recycled water will be used for flushing and 186 KLD will be used for developing green belt around the treatment plant. As much as 164 KLD of recycled water will be used for road washing, avenue plantation and maintaining open space reservation (OSR) land.
The bus terminal that would house south-bound buses is being constructed at a cost of Rs 393.74 crore. The project has been taken up to decongest Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) in Koyambedu. The bus terminus would have the capacity house 250 buses, 270 cars and 3,500 two-wheelers at once. The terminus is coming up at 88.52 acres of land and the built-up area would cover more than 44.74 acres off GST Road.
Apart from treating sewage water, the CMDA has proposed to set up an organic waste converter to compost 1,329 kilograms of bio-degradable waste every day.
Meanwhile, the State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority recently issued environmental clearance to the construction of the Kilambakkam bus terminus.
