However, CBI officials in New Delhi said the probe against others, including the minister and DGP, would continue.
Those arrested were Madhava Rao, Srinivasa Rao and Uma Shankar Gupta, promoters of Annamalai Industries. The others were P Senthil Murugan of the State Food Safety and Drug Administration Department and N K Pandian, a Superintendent with Central Excise and Tiruvallur health inspector Sivakumar.
The case pertains to the illegal sale of gutkha and alleged payment of bribe amounting to Rs 40 crore to government officials and ministers till 2016. While searching Madhav Rao’s office during a raid in June 2016, Income Tax investigators had stumbled upon a ledger which contained details of bribes given to officials and politicians.
In the first week of September, the CBI had raided the residence of DGP Rajendran and Vijay Bhaskar, besides the house of retired CoP DGP S George. Though the investigators had questioned many police officials including SPs, DSPs and inspectors, the agency is now reportedly focussing only on those arrested and their involvement in the multi-crore scam.
