Techie from Telangana charred to death in serviced apartment
A 24-year-old mechanical engineer from Telangana staying in a serviced apartment at Saidapet was found charred to death in a fire that broke out in his room on Sunday morning.
Chennai
Police said the fire broke out around 5.30am in the service apartment on Abdul Razack Street in Saidapet. Two fire tenders were pressed to service from 6 am onwards. It took four hours to douse the fire.Â
Sources at the Fire Department said that five families were rescued before the fire started spreading. The deceased was identified as Bharatwaj, a native of Telangana. He had booked a room in the service apartment from June 16 and was scheduled to check out on Sunday.Â
The first and fourth floors of the apartment are reserved for residents and the second and third floor is for the service apartments.Â
As all the articles in the room, 3E2, were burnt, the Saidapet police got his driving license from the reception and contacted the Khammam police in Telangana. The city police were informed that his parents are in Germany.Â
Police said that his parents didn’t know that he had come to India. They were told that he was staying with a friend in Germany. It is reported that he used to smoke and the receptionist had advised him not to smoke in the room.Â
Police suspect that he would have left a lit cigarette unattended and it could have triggered the fire. The body was sent to the Royapettah Government Hospital for post mortem examination. They have registered a case and investigation is on.
