Cop, RTO official on the run after bid to frame man in ganja case

The incident happened early last month, when head constable Muthukrishnan attached to the Foreshore Estate police station alerted the Abiramapuram police that Jeyaveerapandian, a driving school owner in Mandaveli, was smuggling ganja in his car. Based on the tip-off, a police team searched his car on April 17, and found one kilo ganja. Jeyaveerapandian was immediately placed under arrest. 

However, shocked by the charges against him, Jeyaveerapandian staunchly denied that he had anything to do with the drug. His forceful denial prompted the police to probe further. When the team went through the CCTV footage captured from near his house, they found a man hiding the ganja filled bag inside Jeyaveerapandian’s car the previous night. 

The man in the footage was identified as ‘Karuvadu’ Sathya, a history-sheeter from Kannagi Nagar. When he was arrested and interrogated, he revealed that it was Muthukrishnan who asked him to place ganja in Jeyaveerapandian’s car. 

Realising that the policeman was trying to fix an innocent man, Abiramapuram inspector K Aju Kumar probed further and found that the RTO employee, Saravanan, was angry with Jeyaveerapandian for his refusal to pay him bribe. Saravanan approached his friend Muthukrishnan, and together they conspired to frame Jeyaveerapandian in a ganja case.  Convinced that Jeyaveerapandian was trapped by the two government officials, police released him from custody. Meanwhile, realising that their plan fell through after the CCTV footage was verified, Saravanan and Muthukrishnan have gone into hiding since April 24.
