CMRL set to open Nehru Park with 10K ornamental plants in 2 weeks
Kilpauk and Egmore may regain their green lung in a couple of weeks as a renovated Nehru Park — with over 10,000 ornamental plants — will be opened in a fortnight.
Chennai
CMRL (Chennai Metro Rail Limited), which took over the landmark botanical park for construction work a few years ago, plans to reopen the ‘restored’ park in January.
“Contractors have completed 95% of the work. The remaining will be completed in a couple of weeks,” said a senior CMRL officer requesting anonymity. “We intend to open it during Pongal. Even if the works overshoot Pongal deadline, the park would be opened before the January ends,” he added.
The two-acre park next to the arterial EVR Periyar Salai would have some new attractions like fountain, walking path, children’s play area and a podium for meditation and yoga. Apart from decorative bamboo and a 3,800 square metre lawn, the park would also have over 10,000 ornamental plants and saplings, the officer said.
Also, the old concrete benches have been replaced with artistic stone benches placed at numerous spots
in the park.
CMRL had drew flak from environmentalists for axing nearly 400 trees in corporation parks across the city for construction works.
