Plea to name judicial officers’ quarters after MGR admitted
The Madras High Court has issued notice to the state on a petition seeking to name the residential quarters of Judicial Officers at Egmore and Saidapet Court complexes as “Bharat Ratna Dr MG Ramachandran Residential Complex for Judicial Officers” in this year of MGR’s Centenary.

The division bench comprising Justice S Nagamuthu and Justice Anitha Sumanth also directed the Special Government Pleader Thambidurai to get instructions on the issue within a period of two weeks.
Senior Advocate AE Chelliah, who had also served as Chairman of Tamil Nadu Housing Board when M G Ramachandran was Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, submitted that the housing scheme for judicial officers was drawn in 1978 and a foundation stone was also laid by the then Chief Justice Ramaprasad Rao.
But the scheme became a reality in 1993 when Jayalalithaa was Chief Minister. She had sanctioned Rs 7.33 crores for this purpose. Stating that several buildings are named after departed souls as a mark of respect to them and who were instrumental in doing such remarkable deeds, the senior counsel submitted that with this year being the birth centenary celebration of MGR it would be befitting to name the residential complexes after him.
He said a representation in this regard to the High Court Registrar has been rejected and hence he has moved this plea to quash the same.
