According to Ajay Antony, T.I.M.E, “For the JEE, most students prepare for at least a year or two. Students must now focus on completely revising the Class 11 and 12 physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. All the subjects will have equal weightage and students must pay equal importance to physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.”

    Boards and JEE are different

“For the Board examination, students must answer a question in a way that the invigilator understands it. The question paper will be structured in a manner in which different question will carry different weightage and students must adapt them based on the marks allotted to each question. In JEE, 90 per cent of the questions will have the same weightage. Students will score three marks for every correct answer and a wrong answer will result in a negative score of minus one. For Board exams, students will have to write more to score more marks, while for the JEE, the final answer is the only thing that will matter irrespective of  how long the students take to arrive at the right answer,” adds Ajay.

To achieve a good JEE score, students must have a real understanding of concepts and must possess the speed to solve the problems.

Ajay elaborated further, saying, “Speed will only come if you understand the basics. The basics and skill remain the same, but the format demands that you arrive at the answer faster.”

    Tips to crack JEE

Students need to take a series of model examinations for the JEE. “Students will benefit from getting exposure to multiple choice questions. However,  rushing through the examination alone won’t result in success. Students must take time after each model examinations to review their performance. They need to understand the areas where they scored marks and the reasons for losing marks. They will be provided the answer key and detailed solution for each question. The purpose of the model examinations is to identify you strengths and weaknesses so that you can work upon them. Regular practice will translate to a better performance in the JEE,” he added.

Time management is another aspect that is crucial for students.

“Not a single student will answer all the questions correctly. There are a good number of questions that students can pass over and still be successful at the end of the day. When faced by a particularly hard problem it is best to skip it and answer the question that the student is more comfortable with. The skill of a well-prepared student will be highlighted by the way he manages time during the examination,” says Ajay.

What is the new in JEE 2017

For SC/ST students the qualifying marks would be 65 per cent in Class 12 examination.
