There were very few buses on the Chennai roads on December 5 as several crew of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation kept visiting the Apollo Hospital where Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has been undergoing treatment.

MTC buses were overcrowded and passengers were seen waiting for a long time to get the buses to their destinations. An MTC bus conductor said, “Since, Amma is very critical, many staff, particularly from AIADMK union have gone to the hospital.” He added that the services of the MTC buses will take a hit in the next couple of days. A senior official of the corporation maintained that they were very serious about the operation of MTC buses.
“We are keen that public transport should not be affected in the city. We will continue operating the buses,” the official said. Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) temporarily suspended bus services to Tamil Nadu. It was reported that a KSRTC bus was stoned in Tiruvannamalai. Since, the AIADMK cadre started pouring on to the streets, police personnel blocked all the roads leading to Apollo Hospital to avoid traffic congestion.
CMBT on alert
“The Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) where buses from other districts and states converge, is put on alert. However, there is no panic among the commuters,” said a senior SETC official to DTNext. The official added that they had not suspended bus operations to any district in TN and other states.
