    Utility chain employee dies 5 days after mishap

    One of the four staff members of Saravana Selvarathinam Stores, who had suffered serious injuries in the fire mishap that took place on November 15, died around 1.30 am on November 20.

    Murthy Annamalai (17) failed to respond to the treatment at Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, where he was admitted with 73 per cent burns. The accident occurred at the centralised open kitchen located on Natesan Street in Mambalam due LPG leak when they were involved in preparing lunch. It is said that a half-full cylinder had not been turned off properly the previous day, resulting in the accident. A native of Villupram, Murthy had joined as a house keeping staff at the leading textile chain 10 months ago. His body was handed over to his family members after post-mortem. Murthy is survived by his mother and sister. Following his death, the Mamabalam police have altered the FIR from accidental fire to death caused due to negligence of management which falls under IPC 304 (A). Among the others injured, Amit Sardar (20), who suffered 53 per cent burns, is still hospitalised, while the two others — Ibrahim Mohammed (19) and Ibrahim Ali (20) – have been discharged. Police said Sardar’s condition was stable.
