    District details

    Villupuram District was a part of the then South Arcot District and during the bifurcation in September 1993, it became a separate district. It has 4 Revenue Divisions, 11 Administrative Taluks and 3 Municipalities. Gingee Fort, Auroville - an experimental township, Kalrayan Hills, Thirukkoilur are few among the major tourist spots in the district. Out of 17,18,054 head count in the district, there are 5,42,136 SC and ST people, almost 1/3 of the total population. 

    The three parliamentary constituencies in the district, Villupuram, Kallakurichi and Arani were won by AIADMK candidates during the 2014 elections. With three reserved constituencies, Tindivanam, Vanur and Kallakurichi, the district had seen 103 male and 6 female candidates in the 2011 elections. The Kallakurichi (SC) constituency, had seen two female candidates out of 10 contestants in 2011 election. 10 constituencies out of 11 here, were won by AIADMK alliance in 2011 and lone Gingee constituency was won by PMK candidate Ganesh Kumar with only 1,811 votes margin against DMDK candidate R Sivalingam.

    Votes polled: 1,74,449

    Polling percentage: 81.68% 

    Winner:Ganesh Kumar A (PMK)

    Runner-up: Sivalingam R (DMDK) 

    Margin: 1,811 votes

    A DMK favourable constituency with 7 wins so far from 1967 elections. N Ramachandran of DMK won the constituency thrice in 1977, 1980 and 1989 elections. Muruganandam of INC won the 1984 election with securing 60.61% of votes. Winning parties: PMK (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), INC (1991) and DMK (1989).

    71. Mailam 

    Total no of voters: 1,83,634 

    Votes polled: 1,51,434

    Polling percentage: 82.48%

    Winner: Nagarajan P (AIADMK)

    Runner-up: Prakash R (PMK) 

    Margin: 20,081 votes

    Being a part of Arni parliamentary constituency, it was created as a separate assembly constituency in 2009 delimitation. Gingee and Tindivanam taluks are parts of this constituency. Winning party: AIADMK (2011).

    72. Tindivanam (SC)

    Total no of voters: 1,88,461 

    Votes polled: 1,53,169

    Polling percentage: 81.31% 

    Winner: Haridoss D (AIADMK)

    Runner-up: Sankar MP (PMK)

    Margin: 15,537 votes

    A fort for AIADMK as the party has been winning the last three elections from 2001. C Ve Shnmugam of AIADMK was a two-time MLA of the constituency in 2001 and 2006. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), AIADMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), INC (1991), DMK (1989) and INC (1984).

    73. Vanur (SC)

    Total no of voters: 1,96,094 

    Votes polled: 1,58,671

    Polling percentage: 80.92% 

    Winner: Janakiraman I (AIADMK)

    Runner-up: Pushparaj S (DMK)

    Margin: 25,138 votes

    The constituency had seen only DMK and ADMK MLAs since 1962 elections. From 1962 to 1980, in 5 elections, it was with DMK and during 2001 to 2011 elections, it has been won by AIADMK contestants. N Ganapathy of AIADMK was a two times MLA of the constituency in 2001 and 2006 elections. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), AIADMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989) and ADK (1984).

    74. Villupuram

    Total no of voters: 2,09,392 

    Votes polled: 1,73,050

    Polling percentage: 82.66%

    Winner: Shanmugam C VE (AIADMK)

    Runner-up: Ponmudy K (DMK) 

    Margin: 12,097 votes

    Has seen 8 DMK MLAs so far since 1962 state assembly elections. Among them Ponmudi alone was four times MLA. Ponmudi has been contesting in the constituency from 1989 to 2011; was successful in 4 elections out of 6. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), DMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991) and DMK (1989).

    75. Vikravandi

    Total no of voters: 1,86,842 

    Votes polled: 1,52,070

    Polling percentage: 81.42%

    Winner: Ramamurthy R (CPM)

    Runner-up: Rathamani K (DMK)

    Margin: 14,897 votes

    A newly formed constituency after delimitation process, with parts of Villupuram taluk regions in it. Winning party: CPM (2011).
