School students invent device to wear helmets
Students of a private school here have invented a new device, wherein the two-wheeler would start only if the rider wears the helmet.
Chennai
In a bid to ensure strict compliance of compulsory wearing of helmets, students of class X and XI — J Pooja, S Srinath and M Jayakumar — of Kaligi Ranganathan Montford Matric Higher Secondary School in the city, developed a lowcost device which allows the two-wheeler to start only after the rider wears the helmet. The device bagged the first prize in the South India level ‘Innovate’ contest organised by the VIT University recently.Â
The device consists of a sensor fixed to the helmet, which emits radio frequency waves to the receiver fixed in the two-wheeler. As the receiver would be connected to the control unit, the bike would not start unless the helmet is worn. The students said they have applied to the government for a patent.
