Building their own brand of music
Ashok Nelson is a guitarist of Kerala-based band Thaikkudam Bridge that is set to deliver an evening of foot-tapping music at the Phoenix MarketCity today at 7pm
Chennai
How was the band formed?Â
Music Producer Govind Menon and his musician cousin Siddharth Menon convinced 16 of us friends, all from varying professional backgrounds and living across the country, to come down to Kochi. Driven by the passion for experimenting with and producing music, we started playing at events. But the idea of a full-fledged band was never on the cards until we received an overwhelming response to our gigs on the TV show Music Mojo . And as for the name, one of our vocalists, suggested the name during a jamming session near a place called Thaikkudam Bridge in Kochi.Â
What kind of music defines the band?Â
The best part is that there is no particular genre that defines our band. Since we’re all from different musical genres, influences and languages, we have had the liberty to experiment with a barrage of styles like rock, sufi, jazz, reggae and even Hindustani classical. Despite being a diverse group, there is no creative difference amongst us, and the diversity is our biggest strength.Â
How is it to play in Chennai?Â
The Chennai crowd knows its music and that is a huge driving factor for us as performers. The response and the interaction to every song is so overwhelming.
