Reporter’s Diary: Music makes this MTC driver’s job less boring, busts stress

It is not uncommon to find drivers of Government mofussil buses playing music after installing a music system. The songs keep the drivers and the conductors alert and engaged through long rides. But, a few MTC bus drivers too have followed their TNSTC counterparts and listen to the songs on the go, which the MTC authorities do not approve of.

This scribe, while travelling in an MTC bus recently, noticed a music system installed in the bus and the driver humming along while steering the bus in every nook and corner. Curiosity took over and this scribe asked the driver if it was the transport corporation’s new initiative. The driver replied that he bought the music system and uses it only when he drives. “I remove it and take it home when my shift gets over,” the driver said.

He went on to add that the music relieves him of stress and makes the otherwise mundane job a little interesting. Even the conductor of the bus, who usually sits in the rear seat, was seen sitting behind the audio speaker, nodding his head to the tune.

Although MTC officials said that installing music system in MTC buses is prohibited, they do not monitor it as nobody has complained about it yet. Perhaps, this driver is dropping a hint to MTC authorities to make the jobs of drivers and conductors a bit less monotonous.
