Varalaxmi Sarathkumar talks to us on a video call post-lunch on a weekend afternoon. She is awaiting the release of her maiden horror film Kaatteri directed by Deekay. “I watched Deekay’s Yaamiruka Bayamey and was laughing that entire night. I called up Deekay and Krishna and told them how much I liked it. So, when I was offered Kaatteri I gladly agreed to be a part of it,” she begins. Ever since the film’s announcement, it was speculated that Varalaxmi would play the ghost. She clarifies and says, “I am not the one playing ghost. I know there has to be one female lead in the film, who will bespeculated to play the ghost. But there is a plot twist and suspense added to my character. If you see my previous films, I have been doing such roles and not clichéd characters. This film will be an addition to the list. In Kaatteri, there are two different groups. I, John Vijay, and Maansi belong to one group. We shot for our portions in Sri Lanka and it was fun.”

The actress says that she has even encountered spirits and have interacted with them. “I can easily find out if a place has spirits wandering around. I have had spirits sleeping right next to me and have even interacted with them,” she reveals.

Despite Kaatteri being her first horror film, there wasn’t any challenge per se according to Varalaxmi. “Usually horror film plots are based on revenge. Kaatteri isn’t such a story. The crux revolves around human’s greed. The way with which Deekay has panned out the entire plot was interesting and how my part of the story is connected to it. My character has a rural backdrop to it. Looking back, I wouldn’t say it was challenging but it demanded a lotof physical work. It is nice when you shoot for something which is as unique as this plot and things come out the way they were planned,” she sums up.

With 2021 elections around the corner, we ask her if she would be contesting for her dad Sarathkumar’s party or any other. She says, “No, not this time. I have a lot of other things to do. I will see if I can contest next time.” Varalaxmi, a livewire says that lockdown couldn’t make her slouch in one place. “In fact, I was busy during the lockdown. I rescued animals, had the Save Sakthi campaign work. I lost a lot of weight, I was baking and I ended up becoming a good cook. My friends laughed saying that they haven’t seen me entering the kitchen even once in my life. Cheesecakes, butter chicken, pizzas, fried rice, and chilly chicken. I even started my own baking company called Life of Pie Tarts in which I bake and sell Cheese Pie Tarts,” she concludes.
