But Meesaya Murukku 2 is a much broader and more universal story. It is a global story about music, musicians and the lives they lead. It explores the dreams, struggles, journeys and emotions of people who choose music as their way of life,” he said.

The film also focuses on Gana musicians and artistes, whose songs often draw from their personal experiences and struggles.

“The film becomes an important record of Gana artistes who express their struggles, experiences and journeys through songs and make a living through their art. Their stories and the world they come from are an important part of this film,” Adhi said.

The sequel also features a new father character. In the first film, late actor Vivek played Adhi’s father. Speaking about his absence, Adhi said, “No one can ever fill the place of the late Vivek sir, who played my father in the first part. However, Meesaya Murukku 2 moves through three different time periods, and there is a very important father character in this story as well. I felt that Baba Bhaskar Master was the right person for this role.”

Adhi said Baba Bhaskar was initially hesitant about taking up the role but eventually agreed after trusting his vision for the character.

“He was slightly hesitant initially, but he trusted me and went ahead with the role. He has performed extremely well. I genuinely believe that after this film, he will earn a significant place in Tamil cinema as an actor,” he said.

The film also introduces Ketika Sharma as Laila Singh, a dancer who travels to Chennai from Punjab. The story brings together music, dance, ambition and love, while exploring the lives of people who choose art as their profession.

Half gets Midnight Madness slot at TIFF

<atom:author><atom:name>DT NEXT Bureau</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371163</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Malayalam film,Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF,Half</media:keywords>

Half

Half

CHENNAI: Malayalam film Half, directed by Samjad PS, has become the first film from the language to be screened in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Vijay Sethupathi and director Balaji Tharanidharan, who are collaborating for the third time, spoke about their latest film, following their earlier collaborations, including Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom, one of the biggest hits of Vijay Sethupathi’s career. Producer Atlee attended the event with his wife, Priya Atlee. Composer Sai Abhyankkar added to the excitement with a stylish entry in a vintage car, accompanied by dancers.

Atlee described Baththa as a commercial entertainer that explores humanity and responsibility, with something meaningful for every member of a family. “Very few films can transcend generations and teach something meaningful. ‘Baththa’ has something for fathers, mothers, daughters, sons and every human being,” he said, adding that the film presents its themes through commercial cinema.

Praising Balaji Tharanidharan for recreating the 1980s with authenticity, Atlee said the director never compromises when it comes to cinema. Atlee recalled how the project came to him through Vijay Sethupathi. “During ‘Jawan’, he told me about the project, and I immediately said, ‘Don’t give it to anyone; I want to produce it.’ That’s how ‘Baththa’ came to me,” he said.

He also praised Vijay Sethupathi for trusting him with the project and lauded Sai Abhyankkar’s work, urging audiences to experience the songs and background score on the big screen.

Sai Abhyankkar

Director backs Sai Abhyankkar for National Award

Balaji Tharanidharan said he wrote the story during the lockdown and later narrated it to Vijay Sethupathi, who introduced him to Atlee. The project moved forward after both of them liked the story. One of the director’s biggest surprises was Sai Abhyankkar’s music. Balaji said Atlee had recommended the composer for the project and praised his ability to create music for a film set in the 1980s, despite being born after 2000. “Sai Abhyankkar definitely deserves a National Award for this film. If he doesn’t get one, I’ll be angry,” he said.

Sai Abhyankkar, in turn, said Baththa was the second film he signed and credited Atlee for being the starting point of the project. He expressed happiness at working with Balaji Tharanidharan, whose films he admires, and said the director’s faith in him despite his limited experience gave him confidence.

The composer also spoke about his two-and-a-half-year association with Atlee, who motivated and taught him throughout the journey. He thanked Priya Atlee for supporting him like an elder sister and described working with Vijay Sethupathi as a dream come true.

Lijomol Jose

Vijay Sethupathi praises co-stars

Vijay Sethupathi said he immediately felt that the story would connect with audiences when Balaji Tharanidharan narrated it to him. He described the director as a person who never compromises on cinema and said working with him felt more like spending time with a friend than being on a film set.

Praising Lijomol Jose’s performance, Vijay said he was genuinely amazed by her work. He also lauded young performer Sahasra and the other artistes, while joking that Sai Abhyankkar had stolen the show.

“I felt like I was only the second hero of this film,” he said, referring to the young boy’s performance. He described Sai as a grown-up child with incredible energy and innocence, adding that he hoped the composer would never lose that spirit.

Vijay thanked Atlee for carefully choosing his projects and expressed confidence that Baththa would offer audiences a fresh cinematic experience.

Lijomol Jose, who became emotional while speaking at the event, said the film was particularly special to her. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with Balaji Tharanidharan, Vijay Sethupathi, Atlee and Sai Abhyankkar, and thanked Vijay for his kindness, appreciation and encouragement throughout the journey.

Gondhal: 10 things to know about India’s 2027 Oscars pick, from Ilaiyaraaja’s music to more

<atom:author><atom:name>Online Desk</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371166</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Gondhal,2027 Oscars,India's pick</media:keywords>

Marathi film 'Gondhal' is India's pick for Oscars 2027

Marathi film 'Gondhal' is India's pick for Oscars 2027

CHENNAI: Marathi thriller Gondhal has been selected as India’s official entry for the 99th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature category. It is one of the best crime thriller films," the director, who previously made short films such as "Adnyat", "Antar 19" and "Ajanvruksha" said.

For both the Indian and international audiences who have not watched "Gondhal", Davakhar said his film offers an opportunity to experience India's rich heritage and described it as "a gem".

The film stars acclaimed actors Kishor Kadam, Suresh Vishwakarma, alongside newcomers like Ishita Deshmukh and Nishad Bhoir, among others. The music is scored by the veteran composer Ilaiyaraaja.

Davakhar said they are now working towards an extensive promotional campaign in the US ahead of the awards show, which will take place on March 14, 2027.

Prior to the award ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is scheduled to announce a 15-film shortlist for the International Feature Film category in December, followed by nominations voting in January, 2027. The final five nominees will be announced by the end of January.

"We've a plan for the next six months as to how to ahead about it. I know what responsibility India has given to us. We are going to make our best efforts," Davakhar added.

Last year, director Neeraj Ghaywan's pandemic drama "Homebound" was India's official entry for the Academy Awards and it made it to the 15-film shortlist but failed to secure a spot among the final five nominees.

No Indian film has managed to win in the Best International Feature film segment, which was earlier known as the Best Foreign Film category.

Only three Indian films have received nominations in the category – Mehmoob Khan's "Mother India", Mira Nair's "Salaam Bombay" and Ashutosh Gowarikar's "Lagaan". Deepa Mehta's "Water", starring John Abraham and Lisa Ray, also received a nomination but it was submitted from Canada.

Pa Ranjith’s Vettuvam unfolds leadership tussle set across 3 eras

<atom:author><atom:name>DT NEXT Bureau</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371163</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Director Pa Ranjith,Vettuvam,Time periods</media:keywords>

Vettuvam

Vettuvam

CHENNAI: The makers of director Pa Ranjith’s upcoming Tamil film Vettuvam have unveiled the World of Vettuvam glimpse, offering a closer look at the film’s setting and the conflict that drives its narrative. In theatres from September 25. Starring @ashokselvan @preity_mukhundhan. Directed by @karti.kane. A #GovindVasantha Musical."

The trailer begins with Ashok Selvan's character explaining about himself and his wife to Revathy. "My wife's name is Iyal," he begins and explains that his wife (played by Preity Mukhundhan), who hailed from a rich family, gave up everything for his sake when he had nothing.

The trailer then shows both Ashok Selvan's character and his wife Iyal working in a star hotel. Both husband and wife are subjected to constant supervision and taunts.

At one point, Ashok Selvan's character says he wants to give the life he promised to Iyal. The couple get married and move to a hill station. It is then that life throws a different kind of challenge.

A very disturbing incident occurs when Iyal is alone at home. We then see a number of shady characters who make statements regarding this incident. One man, who seems like a politician, is seen saying, "That night something happened. I too am remorseful that it happened." Another shady looking character says, "You have come to my town and now, it is a problem concerning my home."

Meanwhile, the couple seem to be in a state of perpetual fear. We see a series of grim action sequences in the trailer. The police officer investigating the case, with a cheeky smile, says, "Looks like sir belongs to the soft type." Soon after, we see Ashok Selvan's character involved in a series of explosive action sequences.

The challenging situation results in disagreements between the couple. What happens then is what the film is all about...

It may be recalled that actress Preity Mukhundhan, who plays the female lead opposite actor Ashok Selvan in the film, had, on an earlier occasion, told him that she was "eternally grateful" to him for giving her the amount of space that she had now got in the film.

Participating in the title teaser launch event of the film, Preity Mukhundan had said, "This team is more than a team. They are family. Everyone in this team is very close to my heart. When you watch the film, all of you will like it. You will see how much heart and passion has gone into this film. I am genuinely feeling emotional."

The actress, who thanked actor Ashok Selvan, said, "Ashok, I don't know how to thank you. Of all the mainstream male actors, Ashok is one person I can confidently say who will, without any insecurity, give space to his female co-stars. It is an amazing, amazing quality. Thank you. I am eternally grateful to you for giving me the space you have given me in this film."

The actress also thanked director R Kaarthikeyan for helping her pull of the challenging role. She said, "Karthik sir, they told me that you were the one who vouched for me when I did the audition. I don't know why but throughout this film, you have helped me, taught me the nuances of this character, worked with me and extracted it from me. Thank you so much. This is a character that you have beautifully written. As you said, this character will connect with a lot of women and girls."

The film, which has been produced by K.Karunamoorthy, Ashok Selvan and Abinaya Selvam, has music by Govind Vasantha.

The film has cinematography by Gowtham Rajendran and editing by Selva RK. Stunts in the film have been choreographed by Peter Hein and art direction is by Manikandan Srinivasan. While the story of the film has been penned by Vignesh Raja, its screenplay have been jointly penned by Vignesh Raja, R Kaarthikeyan and Ashok Selvan.

Arjun Das, Aishwarya Lekshmi's Tamil series ‘#Love’ to premiere on October 2

<atom:author><atom:name>IANS</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371167</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>arjun das,Tamil series,#Love</media:keywords>

#Love

#Love

CHENNAI: The makers of popular director Balaji Mohan's upcoming Tamil web series '#Love', featuring actors Arjun Das and Aishwarya Lekshmi in the lead, have now announced that the series is to premiere on a popular OTT platform on October 2 this year.

Soundarya Rajinikanth, who has produced the series, is also its showrunner.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Balaji Mohan, the series is to be streamed on the OTT platform Netflix.

#Love has been written by Nirmal Williams, with Sharada Subramanian and Shweta Chakravarty joining in as co-writers.

Set against the vibrant world of rival dating apps 'FOUND' and 'Find My Bae', '#Love' follows founders Tara and Matthew, who've built entire businesses matching everyone else... Except for themselves.

Netflix India Vice President (Content) Monika Shergill said, “This has been a defining year for us, as we’ve deepened our investment in storytelling from the South of India — and #LOVE is a title we’re especially excited about."

"As we expand our slate across Tamil storytelling, this contemporary, feel-good rom-com stood out as a genre and that was ready for a fresh, confident take. #LOVE steps into that space with a modern, chemistry-driven love story about two rival dating-app founders who end up testing their own theories of love on each other," she added.

"Director Balaji Mohan, together with showrunner and producer Soundarya Rajinikanth, bring a wonderfully playful perspective to the series, while Arjun Das and Aishwarya Lekshmi bring the central relationship to life with chemistry, warmth and humour. The series captures that giddy, unguarded feeling of falling for someone you never saw coming - funny, warm, and exhilarating to anyone who's ever overthought a text message,” she said.

Speaking about the series, showrunner and producer Soundarya Rajinikanth said, "What drew me to #Love was how effortlessly it captures relationships today without losing its warmth and emotion. Balaji has created characters who are ambitious, flawed and incredibly easy to root for, and Arjun and Aishwarya bring such a refreshing energy to them. It's exactly the kind of contemporary story we were excited to bring to audiences with Netflix."

Echoing this, director Balaji Mohan added, "When we made #Love, we wanted to tell a story that feels like it belongs to today. Romance has evolved, the way we meet people has changed, but the emotions at the heart of relationships remain incredibly familiar and timeless. What I love about this series is that it isn't only about two people falling for each other – friendship, family, ambition and finding yourself are equally important parts of their journeys."

The Paradise is the mass film I've been waiting for: Nani

<atom:author><atom:name>Manivasagan Namasivayam</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371693</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Actor Nani,movie,The Paradise</media:keywords>

Actor Nani

Actor Nani

CHENNAI: Actor Nani and director Srikanth Odela are set to bring The Paradise to theatres on September 24. At the film’s pre-release event in Chennai, the duo spoke about the emotionally charged mass entertainer, which centres on a community’s fight for existence. Swaroop Reddy of Think Studios, which is releasing the film in Tamil Nadu, was also present.

Calling The Paradise a potentially revolutionary film, Srikanth said the story revolves around the emotional bond between a mother and her son. Nani plays a rebel whose fight for his mother and his land forms the crux of the narrative. The director said the film explores the larger struggle of a community to protect its existence.

The director revealed that the film draws inspiration from real incidents and experiences he witnessed while growing up in Telangana. Certain incidents around his hometown left a lasting impression on him and eventually inspired the story. Nani described

The Paradise as the kind of mass film he had long wanted to experience as a moviegoer.

“I don’t know if I’m a good actor or not, but I’m definitely a good audience and as an audience I have always wanted to watch a certain kind of mass film, and The Paradise is the film I have been waiting to watch in theatres,” he said.

Stressing that the film goes beyond conventional commercial elements, Nani said the team had attempted to tell a genuine story with powerful emotions while also creating memorable theatrical moments.

Calling it the most tiring film of his career, the actor said the team had put in its hardest work for the project. He also described it as his most anticipated film so far and promised audiences an intense theatrical experience. Switching to Tamil, he added, “Tharamaana sambhavam kaathirukku.”

Nani credited Tamil cinema legends Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam, Bharathiraja and K Bhagyaraj for shaping his knowledge, interest and love for cinema, describing Tamil films as a “bible” for him.

The actor, who has previously featured in Tamil films Veppam and Aaha Kalyanam, said he had been waiting for the right opportunity to work in another Tamil film. He expressed hope of collaborating with filmmakers such as Mani Ratnam, Vetrimaaran and Mari Selvaraj.

Explaining why he avoids the ‘pan-Indian’ label, Nani questioned why films from South India receive the tag when they reach audiences across languages, while Hindi films such as Jawan and Pathaan continue to be identified by their original language.

Srikhant Odela

Nani, ActorI don’t know if I’m a good actor or not, but I’m definitely a good audience and as an audience I have always wanted to watch a certain kind of mass film, and The Paradise is the film I have been waiting to watch in theatres

On his third collaboration with music composer Anirudh Ravichander, Nani said the two shared a close bond and that their previous films together had been successful. He jokingly described their relationship as being “like lovers”.

He also spoke about his friendship with Keerthy Suresh, who joined the film for the song ‘Yeshanagula’. Nani said Srikanth had wanted her to be part of the film, adding that her participation made the team feel complete. He noted that the song had received a strong response online.

Responding to a question about the cigarette-smoking visuals in the posters, Srikanth said the scenes reflected the character’s depressed emotional state and would make sense within the story. Nani said the film had completed the censor process, though its certificate was yet to be granted. The team anticipated an ‘A’ certificate, which could limit access for children and some family audiences. At the center is Parul Chaudhury (Freida Pinto), a devoted wife and mother whose return to Cambridge after five years in Mumbai brings her face-to-face with Amit Mukherjee (Siddharth), the love she never quite left behind.

“This image came to me of all of these characters from the different stories sitting around the Thanksgiving table together,” says Shekar. “In the book, the one thing the stories have in common is that they’re all set in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This beautiful community just blossomed.”

The cast and crew

The series stars an ensemble of Indraneil Sengupta, Parveen Kaur, Adi Roy, Iyla Sundarsingh McKaig, Justin Bartha and Palomi Ghosh along with Pinto and Siddharth.

The executive producers include Madhuri Shekar, Jhumpa Lahiri, John Wells, Nisha Ganatra (Freakier Friday (2025), Late Night (2019)), Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow, and Celia Costas. The rules have created an online discourse over whether it is certification or censorship.

The guidelines have been revised for the first time in nearly 35 years, retaining most existing provisions while introducing a specific warning for drug-related scenes. The previous guidelines were issued in December 1991.

In addition, the government has also reconstituted the CBFC with an 18-member board for a three-year term, including actors Suniel Shetty, Preity Zinta, Pankaj Tripathi and Prosenjit Chatterjee, filmmaker Priyadarshan, musician Ricky Kej and others. The board will function under Shashi Shekhar Vempati who replaced Prasoon Joshi, following his appointment as the chairman of Prasar Bharati.

From curbing excess violence to protecting India’s sovereignty, the revised guidelines lay down the following provisions for film certification:

1. Responsible Entertainment

The film should remain responsible and sensitive to the values and standards of society while providing clean and healthy entertainment. The film should, as far as possible, have aesthetic value and be of good cinematic standard.

2. Creative Freedom And Social Change

Film certification is responsive to social change, and the Board should take account of such changes. The guidelines also state that artistic expression and creative freedom should not be unduly curbed.

3. No Glorification Of Violence

Anti-social activities such as violence should not be glorified or justified. Modus operandi of criminals or content likely to incite offences should not be depicted. Children should not be shown as victims, perpetrators or witnesses to violence. Abuse or ridicule of disabled persons and needless cruelty to animals should also be avoided.

4. Curbing Violent Imagery

Scenes that glorify, dehumanise and desensitise people towards violence should not be shown. Pointless or avoidable scenes of violence, cruelty and horror, or violence primarily intended to provide entertainment, should also not be shown.

Front-of-pack labels on packaged food: SC says it is concerned about health of people

5. Drug And Substance Warning

Scenes that have the effect of justifying or glorifying drinking, drug addiction or tobacco consumption should be avoided. While showing scenes with narcotic drugs, a statutory warning should follow. The warning: “Illicit Narcotics Destroy Health and Guarantee Imprisonment. Say No to Drugs.”

6. Vulgarity And Obscenity

Scenes that offend people with their vulgarity, obscenity or depravity; words that could have dual meanings; scenes degrading women should be avoided.

7. Sexual Violence Curbs

Scenes depicting sexual violence against women, like an attempt to rape, rape or any form of molestation, and also sexual perversions should be avoided and, if germane to the theme, kept to a minimum without showing details.

In exercise of powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 5B of the Cinematograph Act, 1952 (37 of 1952) and in supersession of
notification No. S.O. 836(E), dated the 6th December, 1991, the Central Government has notified Revised Guidelines for Film Certification by CBFC pic.twitter.com/glSTuV7ZGf
— CBFC केंद्रीय फिल्म प्रमाणन बोर्ड (@CBFC_Bharat) September 17, 2026

No Anti-National Content

Visuals or words which promote communal, obscurantist, anti-scientific and anti-national agendas should not be presented. The guidelines also state that friendly relations with foreign States should not be strained.

10. Protecting National Integrity

The Board should ensure that scenes do not call into question the sovereignty and integrity of India or endanger the security of the State and public order.

National symbols and emblems should only be shown in accordance with the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950.

11. Respect For Courts

Visuals that tend to disregard or undermine the dignity of the Court shall be considered 'Contempt of Court'. The guidelines also cover visuals or words involving defamation of an individual or a body of individuals.

12. Context Of The Era

The film should be judged in light of the time period it belongs to while ensuring that it does not deprave the morality of the audience.

13. Age-Based Certification

Films may be certified with age-based UA markers: UA 7+, UA 13+ or UA 16+, depending on suitability for children below seven, 13 or 16 years with parental guidance.

Films found unsuitable under the criteria but considered suitable for adults may be certified for adult audiences only. Rashmika Mandanna is to play the lead role in the film, which is to have music by one of the country's top music directors, Anirudh.

Director Gowtam Tinnanuri, who is to direct the eagerly awaited 'MS - A Legacy on Screen', the biopic of legendary Carnatic singer and Bharat Ratna Awardee M S Subbulakshmi, has already made it clear that they would want to capture the human side of the iconic singer's life in the film.

Speaking at the film's launch event, director Gowtam Tinnanuri disclosed that his entire team had been researching on the great singer for the last one year.

He said, "For the last one year, our entire team was constantly living with one name, M.S. Subbulakshmi Amma. When we started our work, we first thought we were working on a picture in which we had to show India's greatest musician ever produced. But after getting into the story, we slowly realised that it was not simply about a great musician. It's about an extraordinary life."

He went on to add, "When you see M.S. Amma's life, the Bharat Ratna, the great stages, the great concert halls -- all these are just parts of her life. But behind all these, there is a human being, there is a daughter, there is an artiste, there is a woman who dreamed, who saw success, who saw failure, who did a lot of sacrifice. We want to capture that human side of M.S. Amma's life in this film."

The director said, "I am so glad there are lot of youngsters who have come here. We live in a very fast-paced world. Fame comes overnight and probably success is measured by the number of likes, shares and subscribers that one gets. On the other hand, when you see M.S. Amma, her greatness was built over a lifetime through sheer discipline and patience. And I think that's a very good and very powerful message what we can take to the next generation."

Gowtam Tinnanuri also sought to reassure the fans of the great singer that the team looking to make the biopic understood the great responsibility they had.

"From the entire team, I would like to say one thing. We truly understand the magnitude of this story. And whatever the frame we create or whatever the script we write, everything comes from the deep respect and love for M.S. Amma. We are grateful. I am talking on behalf of the entire team. We are grateful and we really thank God for giving us this opportunity to spend this part of our lives with the story of M.S. Amma," he reassured.

For the unaware, the film is to be produced by Allu Aravind's Geetha Arts in association with Rockline Entertainment and Bunny Vas Works.

Madras High Court stays release of Arulnithi-starrer 'Demonte Colony 3'

<atom:author><atom:name>DT NEXT Bureau</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371163</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Madras High Court,Ajay Gnanamuthu,Demonte Colony 3,White Nights Entertainment</media:keywords>

(L) Madras High Court, (R) Demonte Colony 3 poster

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has stayed the release of actor Arulnithi-starrer Demonte Colony 3 following a legal dispute between White Nights Entertainments and director Ajay Gnanamuthu over the film's production and rights.

A Vijaya Subramanian, authorised signatory of White Nights Entertainments, filed a petition before the court stating that a deed of partnership was executed with director Ajay Gnanamuthu on January 2, 2023, for the production, marketing, and distribution of feature films.

The petitioner stated that the partnership covered the Demonte Colony franchise, including future sequels such as Demonte Colony 3 and Demonte Colony 4. Daayra builds its entire conflict around this idea. The film opens with people celebrating an encounter carried out by DCP Raman Kumar (Prithviraj Sukumaran), in which men accused of murdering and gang-raping a girl are killed. The premise bears similarities to the 2019 Telangana encounter, with a press conference scene later in the film appearing to recreate the one held by the police officer who led the operation. Meanwhile, another DCP, Ajooni Kohli (Kareena Kapoor), takes up the case amid suspicions surrounding the encounter killings.

Daayra is an intense crime thriller that unfolds through two parallel tracks — one tracing the events leading to the encounter and the other following the investigation into it. Meghna Gulzar handles the unconventional narrative structure well, weaving in references to several such crimes that frequently make headlines.

The film also draws from the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, which led to significant legal and social outcomes. In one striking exchange, Ajooni responds to a colleague who says the system has changed since the Delhi incident. “The system has changed, but not the people,” she says. The dialogue captures the film’s central question: what happens when people lose faith in the judicial process and take the law into their own hands?

What makes Daayra gripping, despite the audience already knowing the incident and its outcome, is Meghna's focus on the people and emotions surrounding it. The director explores the trauma, personal struggles and reactions of those caught in the aftermath, keeping the narrative engaging beyond the central incident. The film also uses moments of sarcastic humour, offering some much-needed relief from its otherwise heavy subject. Importantly, the humour emerges naturally from the characters and their situations, without diluting the film's intensity.

Film: Daayra Director: Meghna Gulzar Cast: Kareena Kapoor and Prithviraj Sukumaran Synopsis: Inspired by true events, Daayra follows DCP Raman Kumar and DCP Ajooni Kohli as a controversial case places them on opposing sides of the same system. Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Kareena and Prithivraj do justice to their respective roles. The characters navigate a range of conflicting emotions and intense chase sequences, with the entire cast delivering convincing performances throughout.

Coming to Amit Trivedi’s music, unlike the loud background scores often associated with crime thrillers, his restrained approach enhances the emotional weight of the story.

What the film fails to explore adequately, however, are the personal lives of its lead characters. Raman Kumar’s family gets very little screen time, leaving the audience with limited insight into his life beyond his profession. Ajooni Kohli, meanwhile, has her own battle as she seeks justice for her father, a judge. This subplot offers some understanding of her commitment to the judicial process, but it is not developed enough to establish her motivations. The jail scene introducing her character also feels out of place.

But, overall, Daayra is an engaging and gritty crime thriller that effectively presents two contrasting approaches to justice through the two cops: Raman Kumar, who believes in delivering justice by eliminating criminals, and Ajooni Kohli, who chooses to pursue it through the judicial system and due process. Despite being led by two major stars, the film keeps Prithviraj and Kareena apart for most of its runtime, with the two sharing the screen only in the climax. Even then, Meghna Gulzar refrains from providing a definitive answer. They walk away in different directions, leaving the audience to decide which approach they agree with. And that brings the film back to its central thought — there is nothing purely black or white when it comes to justice.

Dulquer Salmaan's 'Aakasamlo Oka Tara' to hit screens on November 20

<atom:author><atom:name>IANS</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371167</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Dulquer Salmaan,Tollywood,Satvika Veeravalli</media:keywords>

'Aakasam Lo Oka Tara' film poster

'Aakasam Lo Oka Tara' film poster

HYDERABAD: The makers of director Pavan Sadineni's upcoming film 'Aakasamlo Oka Tara', featuring actors Dulquer Salmaan and Satvika Veeravalli in the lead, on Thursday announced that the film would hit screens world over on November 20 this year.

Swapna Cinemas, the production house producing the film, took to its social media timelines to make the announcement.

It wrote, "The journey to the stars begins. #AakasamLoOkaTara / #AOTMovie - 20th November 2026 in theatres. His interest in sketching and illustration helped him develop the screenplay and visualise his characters. “When I wrote the script, I had a clear visualisation of how each character would look and how they would appear realistically on screen,” he says. Making his directorial debut, Saraj wanted the film to carry a meaningful message. “Cinema is not just an art form but also a powerful medium to communicate with a large audience. I wanted to convey something meaningful through my film. I had several stories in mind, but I chose Paris Cafe as my debut because it carried a strong, relevant and important message,” he explains.

Anumol, who plays Tara, says she connected with the character because of their similarities, particularly Tara’s willingness to speak up about what she believes is right or wrong. “I am someone who is vocal about what I believe is right or wrong and won’t hesitate to express my opinion. Tara also does that,” she says. “She stands up for her husband and supports her family, but she also points out their mistakes. The character has several layers, and that was what attracted me to Tara,” she adds. Her relationship with her husband, played by Guru Somasundaram, explores mature love, which Anumol found particularly interesting to portray.

Nayana Sai, who began her career as a model, describes the transition as an exciting journey. “As a model, you have to maintain a composed expression and cannot emote as much. Acting has so many layers, emotions and characters, and I have always been fascinated by cinema since I was a child,” she says.

In Paris Cafe, Nayana is paired opposite Sai Vicky, with their relationship exploring the nuances of young love. “We don’t often talk about mature love, but both young and mature love are beautiful in their own ways, and that's what makes the story more interesting,” she says.

Sai Vicky, who plays one of the leads in Paris Cafe, said the film offered him a new experience. “This is my first film in a lead role. I explored a different side of my acting,” he shares. Careful not to reveal too much about the story, he urged audiences to experience the film on the big screen, a response that had everyone in the room laughing. Looking ahead, Vicky says he hopes to take on characters that drive the narrative forward. “I want to play strong characters that drive the story forward,” he adds.

The director also spoke about the casting process, explaining that each actor was selected based on the requirements of their respective characters. Guru Somasundaram was chosen for his versatility, while Anumol came on board after Saraj came across her work and felt she was well suited to play Tara. Nayana Sai and Sai Vicky were selected for the freshness they brought to their characters.

Anumol also spoke about the film’s costumes, which allowed her to portray a contemporary woman. “This was a rare opportunity for me to wear comfortable, modern clothes. In many of my films, I have been given traditional costumes, so this was a very comfortable and different experience,” she tells us with a smile. She also dubbed her portions in Tamil, describing the process as challenging but rewarding.

With romance, family relationships, emotional conflicts and a social message at its core, the team believes Paris Cafe will leave audiences with plenty to reflect on. Nayana said the film balances a light-hearted love story with deeper emotions, while Saraj believes its relatability will help audiences connect with the characters and their experiences.

Kamal Haasan's House of Khadar collection wins fashion award in New York

<atom:author><atom:name>Online Desk</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/2371166</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Kamal Haasan,New York,House of Khadar,fashion award</media:keywords>

Amritha Ram

Amritha Ram

CHENNAI: Actor-politician Kamal Haasan's handloom fabric label KH House of Khadar (KHHK)’s Sutura collection has won the Best Ready-to-Wear Collection Award at the Runway Seven Fashion Awards in the USA.

Amritha Ram, design head of KH House of Khadar, received the award in New York.

Sutura, which means 'thread' in Latin, was presented at the New York Fashion Week in 2024. Director Balaaji keeps the mystery alive through most of the film, making it an engaging thriller despite a few loose ends.

The film opens in the 1970s, introducing a librarian who gets his hands on The Dark Heaven, a book written by a French researcher specialising in supernatural forces. As he reads the book, he discovers details of events that are yet to happen. His attempts to warn people about the impending incidents ultimately lead to him becoming a victim himself, just as predicted in the book.

From here, the narrative moves between different timelines, taking us from the 1970s to the present and then back nearly two decades. Each time, the mysterious book finds its way into the hands of another person, triggering another series of unfortunate events.

Set in the same village, the story then introduces a strange pattern of deaths occurring every seven years. The villagers believe these incidents are connected to the curse of Vanamangai. Balaaji uses graphic animation to narrate the story of Vanamangai and Dasarathan — a sequence neatly executed without holding up the narrative, and one that establishes the mythology behind it all.

As the story progresses, the villagers begin to believe that the descendants of Dasarathan are still being affected by the curse. Meanwhile, a spell of murders points to an investigation towards a psychopathic killer who has crossed over from Kerala. How he is identified, and how the threads of the book, the curse and the murders connect, forms the rest of the film.

The biggest strength of The Dark Heaven is the way Balaaji maintains an intriguing atmosphere throughout. The film manages to sustain its suspense until the climax, even without having any big stars. Several familiar actors, including Nizhalgal Ravi and Vela Ramamoorthy, appear in brief roles and fit naturally into the world of the film.

Siddhu, playing the police officer investigating the murders, carries a challenging role with ease. Riythvika gets an important character that is somewhat different from her earlier roles, while Bigg Boss-fame Tharshika, who is Siddhu’s pair, also gets a significant part to play.

Film: The Dark Heaven Director: S Balaaji Cast: Sidhu Sid, Tharsika Navaratnaraja, Riythvika, Nizhalgal Ravi, Vela Ramamoorthy, Rating: 3.5/5 stars

The cinematography is another notable aspect. The village locations, rituals and surrounding atmosphere are captured effectively, with the film making good use of both day and night sequences. The music and sound design aid the thriller portions by creating and enhancing the tension well.

However, the film does lose some of its grip during a few action sequences. These portions feel weaker compared to the otherwise carefully constructed thriller and, at places, appear unnecessary. There are also a few unanswered questions and unexplained plot points. But as the film has hints of a potential sequel, these loose ends could get connected in the next part.

On the whole, The Dark Heaven works as a suspense thriller that both manages to give scares and keep the audience invested in its mystery.

The Dark Heaven

Director: S Balaaji

Cast: Sidhu Sid, Tharsika Navaratnaraja, Riythvika, Nizhalgal Ravi, Vela Ramamoorthy,

Synopsis: In the hill village of Mekkarai, where it is customary for men to die every seven years during the month of June, a newly appointed police inspector arrives to investigate a series of mysterious murders.

Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Suriya and Jyotika celebrate 20 years of love with vow renewal video

The couple, who last shared the screen in Sillunu Oru Kadhal, have two children, daughter Diya, born in 2007, and son Dev, born in 2010.

The couple recently relocated their family from Chennai to Mumbai. Suriya has said the move was partly to allow Jyotika to spend more time with her ageing parents and also to provide their children with more options for the International Baccalaureate curriculum.

Titled The Sequel, the vow-renewal video celebrates their two decades together, including their love, disagreements, compromises and understanding. Their children, Diya and Dev, were also present at the intimate ceremony.

In her note accompanying the video, Jyotika said the celebration was not about a perfect marriage but about their imperfections, sacrifices, mutual understanding and the way they have loved each other selflessly.

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DdUFAt2yiyO/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF;
